Small miracles

I've been periodically trying on my pre-pregnancy clothes over the past weeks to see just how much longer I have to make-shift my wardrobe. Being too thin for maternity clothes and too fat for regular clothes is very tricky.

Yesterday I tried on a pair of shorts that were too tight on me last week and I could get them closed. Today I was brave enough to try on my jeans...and they fit!!! Just last week I couldn't even get them buttoned because my hips were too big.

Thank goodness. I was beginning to think that I would never be able to wear my clothes again, and as much as I would love a new wardrobe, that's not in my budget.

I shower, I swear

My son is now 6-1/2 weeks old and he is taking on little boy tendencies every day. Recently it has been a nasty, pungent gas coming from his diaper. I don't understand this. He is breastfed and his poop doesn't smell, but holy moly the odor that he expels with each fart is violently unappealing.

Which makes matters worse is that they are always really loud and you think that just by picking him up and moving him from the place he was just sitting would help, but no, it stays trapped in his diaper and follows him around like the plague.

So, even though I shower every day, I can't escape the gas that is seeped through his diaper warming my lap when I feed him or hold him on the couch, or the gas that passes right in my face as I'm carrying him, or when I lean over to kiss him as I put him to bed.

I fear there is more to come as he gets older. He is after all a little boy and will find it funny, unlike girls who will try and hide it as much as possible.

Hilarity

Oh poop!

I had my 6 week post natal appointment today and I'm happy to report I'm in working order and everything checks out well. But this post is not about my poop (thankfully). After my appointment I headed to visit my friend Jessica at her office since she had never met Macias.

She invited me in to her office for a longer visit rather than sitting in the car. As I went to take Macias out of his car seat we noticed that he had finally pooped. His digestive system is changing of late and instead of having four poops a day he has one massive one every 2-4 days. Today was day 3.5 and he decided to strike.

As we lifted him out we assessed the damage. It was running out the left side of his diaper, down his leg. He moved his hand and swiped his leg, now it was on his hand. The mustard color (and consistency) had seeped its way from the car seat cover, down the belt, through the harness and out the bottom. It took us about 20 minutes to get him completely cleaned up with a new diaper and onesie (thankfully I came prepared!) and for the rest of the mess we just had to shove paper towels in various areas of the car seat until I could get home and clean it (which took my about 45 minutes).

On a positive note, I now know how to disassemble the car seat. I hope I can put it back together.

Phantom cries

For a first time mom I think I'm pretty lucky. I go to bed between 9-10pm and Morgan stays up to give Macias his one bottle of formula a day which he normally takes between 11pm-12am. Then he wakes up around 3 or 4am and then again between 6-7am. That means that I get a pretty good amount of sleep. Or I would, if it weren't for the phantom cries.

These are the cries that I hear in my head that aren't actually being vocalized. I dream about babies, I hear cries, as I'm drifting off to sleep I hear them over the box fan in our room and Morgan's wheezing and snores (those sometimes sound like a baby crying off in the distance). I look at the video monitor and Macias is sound asleep. So, it's not the actual crying that keeps me up at night, it's the voices in my head.

Can't blame that on the baby.

Best of Intentions

When Morgan needs something he (most of the time) buys things* that are functional first, but they always have to have some sort of "cool" factor.

*These items do not include cereal boxes just for the toy inside, a seventh lightsaber just because, or the newest Enterprise ship from Star Trek.

Recently he went out to buy a night-light. He wanted one that uses LEDs so it will be more energy efficient. Logical and functional right? He came home with one that he found that also had his "cool" factor. When he plugged it in it changed colors in a strobing manner which means that between the changing of colors, it went completely black. How are we supposed to see when it's pitch black every 3-4 seconds?

So, about a week later out he went again in search for a LED night-light that would work. When he came home I pointed out that it, again, was color changing. He was shocked as he did not see that on the packaging (even though it said it). At least this time it didn't go black in between the colors. We tried to use it and in the middle of the night I noticed it had been turned off. Apparently he could see the colors changing through his eye lids.

In the end I went digging through his bathroom drawer and found the LED night-light that his mom had given to him a couple of years ago which is just one color and stays on all the time. Problem solved.

The last item is his new alarm clock. He was tired of not being able to see the clock on my side table because of his bad eye sight. So, he came home with a clock for his side that uses bright blue LEDs and has gigantic numbers. The problem? It's so bright that he can't sleep since it's shining in his eyes so he has to turn it against the wall. We really could just use that as the night-light. So, he has two unusable night-lights and a clock that he can't read since it now faces the wall.

Love it.

Post Script

I must clarify for those who think we're completely nuts:

Three out of the four monitors we're actually given to us and the movement detector is for detecting breathing so it sounds an alarm if he stops breathing. We want it to detect movement. We're not concerned that he's going to climb out of the crib at this stage.

Rediculousness

Fact: We have a small house, a very small house, about 1,056 square feet to be exact.

Fact: Our bedroom door is roughly one step away from the bedroom door of Macias's nursery.

Fact: We have four monitors.

Don't look at me...you know who the gadget freak is. They range from the very plain and basic, to a movement detector, to a portable hand-held video, and then a fixed 7" LCD screen video monitor.

I don't even turn on the sound since you can hear him in any room in the house and probably outside as well.

Help.

4th of July Family Photos

We enjoyed a BBQ at a friend's house on the 4th and thankfully had one of the The Island Packet's (the newspaper where Morgan works) professional photographers there to take some photos. Thanks Jay!

If I were anyone else...

If I were anyone else besides my overly unemotional, bitter self I probably would have cried.

Take one postpartum woman who has not stepped out of her front door for five days and is unable to make decisions, or at least fast ones. Add a 3 week old baby.

Now load them in to the car to go on one of their first outings by themselves in to the world (not counting the pediatrician's office).

I have finally decided on the perfect place to eat where I can take my baby and still be outside and not deal with a lot of people.

We arrive at the bagel place, get unloaded from the car, baby in car seat and stroller, get to the front door just to see the owner turn the "open" sign off in front of me while noticing they have changed their hours for the summer. We were late by 4 minutes.

Mace didn't mind since he was asleep the whole time but I was pretty pissed.

If regular pregnancy or postpartum hormones actually affected me like a normal person I would have cried. Instead I went to Arby's.

Side note: I think it's kind of weird that pregnancy and postpartum hormones really didn't/haven't affected me. I never had any mood swings (I was my normal self, whether good or bad), I have not had fits of unexplained crying, and things aren't really phasing me postpartum. Maybe there is something to this bitter, cold-hearted thing after all. It makes it much easier to cope with annoying hormones.
