The Last "Twenty-Something" Birthday

Your 29th birthday, I'm told, is tough on some people. It means that you have finished your 29th year and are about to start your 30th. It means you're one, short, sad year away from 30.

I've never understood why people dread their 30th birthday. But, I've also been told that's because I'm not 30 yet.

A lot of people I know who have turned 30 talk about how they viewed the age of 30 when they were younger and what it was supposed to mean, or what they wanted to accomplish by that ripe, old age. I've determined that most people who are upset about turning 30 haven't lived up to their own goals and expectations they held for themselves.

As I turned 29 today I evaluated my life and what I've accomplished so far (only "grown up" things - people don't need to know I was 6th grade backgammon champion):

Two college degrees: check
Marriage: check
House: check
Great Career/job: check
Licensure: check
Baby: check (fabulous baby, I might add)

I can honestly say that when I was young I never had a specific idea of what I wanted to accomplish by 30 or what I thought my life would look like (probably because I couldn't imagine myself being so OLD). Looking at it now I'm pretty pleased with my place in life and am proud to be where I am, which is probably why I'm not dreading it.

After all 30 is just 30 and it's just a number...but, that's because I'm not 30 yet.

I wasn't bored at all.

I was just impressed.

You've got a lot of street cred.

But, you forgot to add a few other accomplishments:

Learning to use the English Language (Iardaho Charks)
and
Eating meat.

For what it's worth, neither 29 nor 30 bothered me at all.

However, 31 did. I guess I viewed it as marching toward 40.

Happy birthday!

So true, why fear 30 when you've done all you've wanted to do working up to it?

Happy Birthday, Allison.
