I have heard through the grapevine that someone (I'm not sure who) told one of my old coworkers that I look like a straw with a walnut sucked through it. I'm choosing to infer that they mean I'm skinny everywhere else besides my belly.
I'm taking it as a compliment.

I certainly think you should. I can think of a great many things it would be worse to be compared to.
